How companionship works with us

Companionship is the care most of our families start with, and often the care that matters most. A regular visitor who knows the house, the routine and the stories turns a long, quiet week into one with something to look forward to.

Your carer will do whatever makes the visit worth having: a walk to the shops, a game of cribbage, a sandwich made the way they like it, a hand writing the Christmas cards. They also notice. If the fridge is empty or the post is piling up, the family hears about it the same day.

Companionship visits are at least one hour, so there is time to sit down. Many families book two or three afternoons a week and add personal care later, with the same carer, if it is ever needed.

What it includes

  • Conversation, cards, crosswords and the radio on
  • Cooking a meal and eating it together
  • Shopping, prescriptions and the post office
  • Walks, the garden centre, church or the hairdresser
  • Light housework, laundry and changing the bed
  • A call to the family after each visit if you would like one

Often right for

  • Someone who is managing, but lonely or losing confidence
  • Families who live too far away to pop in
  • A gentle start for someone who would refuse "a carer"

“Dad would not hear of “a carer”. He hears of Pete, who comes on Tuesdays and Fridays, takes him to the garden centre and lets him win at cribbage.”
